  • I have tried Beyond Meat, and it is very tasty and has the texture of a hamburger. But as I vegan, I find myself repelled by the realism. To eat something that has the texture of muscle fiber, sinew, or any of the other attributes of flesh is repellant. I don’t want to ‘feel like’ I’m eating flesh; just the opposite. While ‘Beyond Meat’ is a meat ‘substitute’, I don’t want a substitute. I do use Gardein because their product listed as ‘crispy tenders’ and ‘fishless filet’ which are vegan, but don’t have the animal meat texture. It’s all protein….good tasting and doesn’t try to make me think I’m eating an animal. I don’t know about their ground stuff. Never tried it.

    • Totally understand, and there are a lot of vegans who feel the same way you do. Beyond Meat, Impossible, and other “realistic” meat substitutes are really most ideal for people who are just starting to transition from eating meat to eating vegan. I know as a new vegan many years ago “mock-meats” were a big deal for me and I’m sure if the Beyond Burger or Impossible Burger existed back then, it would have made my transition that much easier. These days I don’t eat nearly as many “mock-meats” as I used to, but I do still enjoy them from time to time.

There’s this place called Doomie’s Home Cookin’ in Los Angeles that has this incredible vegan BBQ pulled pork sandwich that is so realistic that the first time I tried it, I had to put it down and make sure it was actually vegan. Threw me wayyyy off. I seriously felt like I was transported back in time to before I was vegan. Very uncanny feeling that was, so I get what you’re saying. It’s just awesome knowing that if someone really NEEDS the texture etc. of meat that they can still have that all while not harming animals in the process.
